Story to STEM

Kindergarten students take inspiration from literature.

Brawerman East's youngest scientists and engineers are taking on big projects – from building houses to constructing rockets. In our Innovation Lab, Innovation Specialist Isai German, begins each class with reading Kindergarten students an inspiring story, including Rocket Says Look Up, about a young girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut. Students then use everyday materials to build their own model rockets.

As part of these projects, students learn the basics of engineering, like, How do you attach two objects? How do you make a structure that will stand up? They also develop fine motor skills that not only help them in the lab, but also support key foundational skills in handwriting.

Our Innovation Lab is a space where students develop collaboration skills, design-thinking, and a "growth mindset" as they build and experience the joy of learning.
