Brawerman Elementary School students, in grades four through six, began the year by watching Steve Jobs’ Stanford graduation speech from 2005. Students were challenged to respond to a series of questions as a basis for their own speeches. For example, when Jobs says, “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice . . . have the courage to follow your heart and intuition,” do you think this is good advice? Can you think of a situation where you stuck with your own opinions even if it was met with objection? As part of this word-processing and oral presentation exercise, we reflected on what living a creative life entails, why it is sometimes a good idea to take the path less travelled, and why trying new things can lead to some very positive outcomes.
We looked specifically at how Jobs’ decision to take a calligraphy class led to the incorporation of beautiful fonts on the computer interface we know today. As a nod to this endeavor, we created our own fonts using a calligraphy marker, a scanner, and the yourfonts.com website. Students were challenged to edit in iMovie raw footage of their speeches from two cameras. Unfortunately, we noticed too late that one of our audio cables was broken on our microphone, so students were then challenged to try to make audio improvements in iMovie. Please stay tuned for updates and improvements as we experiment with new technology in the lab!
